I still read DTW occassionally and within the past few weeks two more 2 gen rams tranny's failed. Both had the freaking rpm jumping issue for awhile first before they tranny puked. Just curious if anyone else has had this problem and if so how long and did ya fix it. If you don't know of this issues it is when cruising with OD on and the rpms kick up bout 125rpms or so and comes back down. Mines done this for at least 1.5 years and no problems - in fact it stop doing it for a while now. Last thing I heard that could cause this is the TCC/OD solenoid - which cost bout 248 bucks to replace.

The problem you describe at cruising speed is the TCC not fully engaging. This can be caused by a worn TCC, or improper fluid use(depending on year of the transmission). If you have a '98.5-newer Ram with an auto, then your transmission is electronically controlled and VERY tempermental. The 47RE went out in my '99 at about 60k miles. I replaced it with a 47RE that had 18k miles on it and installed Dexron/Mercon III fluid(more on that later). I didn't have a problem with the TCC until after installing the suspension lift, 4.10's(replaced 3.55's), and tires(36x14.50's). The TCC shudder only existed in O/D when it would try to engage under moderate to heavy throttle. The engaging/disengaging occured when cruising at 45mph when the transmission had trouble deciding whether, or not, to stay in OD with the TCC locked. My short term solution to both problems was to hit the "O/D off button" until I reached speeds where I knew the transmission wouldn't "hunt"(steady 50mph+). About 6months before I sold the truck, it was time for a transmission fluid/filter change. This time, I used Dexron/Mercon III along with a bottle of Lucas Oil transmission fix, because I figured it was cheaper than buying a case+ of Chrysler's ATF+4. The Lucas Oil trans. fix has friction modifiers that are supposed to reduce, or eliminate, TCC "shudder". Sure enough, after changing the fluid and adding the Lucas Oil it was like driving a totally different truck! 1. The TCC no longer shuddered under heavy throttle 2. The transmission didn't hunt, or engage/disengage the TCC repeatedly at 45mph anymore. 3. I no longer had to use the O/D off switch as I had been doing.
Long story short, if you have a '98.5-newer Ram with an automatic transmission... buy the ridiculously expensive ATF+4 from the dealer(it's pricey!), or run Dexron/Mercon III with a bottle of Lucas Oil. Either way, the 46RE and 47RE's found under 1500's and 2500/3500's require friction modifiers to prevent TCC shudder and failure to engage(which creates heat and added wear/tear).

Trannys in the rams aint worth a chit I will tell you that from first hand experience. I had three go out on my 97 1500. Great info there, I will take that to heart and go out and get me some of that oil. I just think they could beef em up a little.

Apparently the new thrust washers in the late model 48RE transmissions are causing a "designed failure" of the rear planetary, rear annulus gear, and the thrust washer itself around 50k miles. Basically a $6 - $7 part(the thrust washer) will end up costing the consumer $2k+ on a transmission rebuild outside of the factory warranty. If the same re-designed washer is used in the rebuild, guess what you have to look forward to in another 50k miles? Here is a link to DTT's website where the owner identifies the thrust washer problem and how he can't understand why the design would be changed to CREATE a problem, unless that was Chrysler's intention. www.dieseltrans.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=473If the supposed "heavy duty" replacement for the 47RE is designed to fail, it makes you wonder if there are similar "designed failure" parts in other Chrysler transmissions...

I had a 98 Dodge Ram and I had to have it rebuilt about a year ago but I sold it in June 05. It was a great running truck I just wanted something new with a warrenty. The overdrive keep coming on and would not shift right!! But now I have a 02 (gen 3) and not to sure what may happen! But when I bought it from the dealership I got a great warrenty. That is a must with the tranny problems that dodge has and I knew that I was going to install a lift and big tires.
But the funny thing is when I bought it I had them write in the final papers that is was lifted so if there is any problems they will take care of it. I have a good buddy that works the finance department and he hooked me up!! Well that is my story!!
But I will always be a dodge man through and true!!

Ive aso been having the sameproblem for the past year. My rpms jump when in over drive and also if i turn the OD off it will still do it. Even though you turn the OD off the TC still locks up. At least this is what mine does. And whenever the TC goes into lock is when mine starts jumping the RPMS. I had the check ngine light come on last week with the P1740 (TCC/OD soleniod) code. Took it in and the dealer replaced the Boost Plate with an updated version with one with with a larger hold into to allow more fluid in the soleniod. The light is now off but the rpm surge is still their. Of course the dealer says they have no clue whats going on. I still have 25K left on the power train warranty so im not too worried about it. If the tranny goes it will only ocst me my $100 deductible.

If I run with the OD off it never does it, and speeds of over 70mph it don't again. The only time I notice is speeds from 45-70, and now its stopped doing it for a few months now. I have never gotten a code to flash up either. I would really hate to drop the money for a part I don't need, but then again they are such lovely tranny's - lol.
