well i say for the money that it costs to do it yourself its not really worth it. my dad di that to his truck and it faded right away and wasnt very think and didnt hold up all that well. i think it costs something like 400 bucks here to get it done and if i used my truck more i would pay that without thinking twice.

I did a Herculiner for mine - not bad especially considering the price. I think it was 75 bucks for a short bed kit, and since then I have added another can to make the bottom of the bed thicker. Overall no complaints, though I should have taken more time in roughin the box - few spots liner won't stick great. I have carried items from 6' grader blades, too 100 landscaping bricks. The biggest test was on the nerf bars but a berm took off most of the stuff - weight of truck was on the bars momentarily though. Got some pics if you wanna see how it still looks in the bed.

The professional spray in job is really worth the $400 in my opinion. Considering the prep work and how much thicker they spray it on. I used the wal-mart roll on liner to paint below the trim line on my truck. It has faded kinda uneven, and I am constantly touching it up.

Here's a few pics: Two things I regret: should have roughed tailgate better, and spend the few extra bucks for the UV protectant. Its over a year old and still has some shine to it - bottom of bed wasn't cleaned from hauling last stash of parts either.

I did my own using the Duplicolor roll on. It cost around $85.00 and hasn't faded I am happy with it. I even did my back step and nerf bars too.

The UV protectant, off the top of my head can't think of were I seen it. Check their website - and go from there may be the quickest bet.
Yeah you want to rough up were ever you are putting the liner on. Smooth surfaces won't let the liner adhere, and the liner won't stick and can scratch off easy. In the kit it gives you both the roller and brush - I believe (memory is horrible). Not sure what happened with your friends - I used the roller on the big areas and I can't slid my spare over the bed very good now. In fact it is quite painful sliding across the bed now with the liner in.

Ive got a Durabak roll on liner in mine, and its suppost to resist fading. The prep work took a long time (20 year old bed) but the end results were worth it. Ive still got a 1/4 of a gallon left, and plan to put it on the tailgate when i get it painted. I might even put another coat or so on the bed later on. It cost about 120 for the gallon. I think you can even spray it on if you've got the right gun setup.
